A community born from lived experience
Beyond The Storm exists because the hardest part of cancer often begins after the treatment ends.
A safe space for people the world expects to simply move on.
Beyond The Storm is a supportive community for people recovering, emotionally and physically, after cancer treatment. We provide peer support, wellbeing initiatives, confidence-building opportunities and a safe space for anyone who feels lost, isolated or overwhelmed once successful treatment is behind them.
Our purpose is simple: to remind survivors that life, hope and healing exist beyond the storm, surrounded by people who truly understand. Because surviving is just the beginning.
Small enough to be heard.
The big cancer charities do extraordinary work, but their forums can feel like shouting into a crowd. You either get lost among thousands of unanswered threads, or you post something and find yourself overwhelmed by more replies than you can hold.
We do it differently. At Beyond The Storm you’re placed in a small group of like-minded people at a similar point in their journey, where conversation stays personal and human. Somewhere you’re not a username in a queue, but someone whose name is known and whose story matters.
“Surviving cancer is not the whole story. For many of us, it’s only the beginning of learning how to live again.”
Toni, Founder of Beyond The Storm
In June 2024, I began feeling unwell and was admitted to hospital with diabetes, severe dehydration, anaemia and a rare form of diabetic ketoacidosis. What seemed like routine investigations quickly became something far more frightening.
After a series of tests, a consultant asked to speak with me privately and gently explained that they had found what was likely early-stage bowel cancer. Over the following months came endless scans, blood tests, appointments and waiting rooms, most of them faced alone. Every missed call from the hospital filled me with fear. Every result felt terrifying.
On the 27th of December, I was formally diagnosed with bowel cancer. Moments later, I was told they had also found a second suspected cancer. Further tests confirmed it: endometrial cancer. Within weeks, I underwent an eight-hour operation involving both bowel surgery and a total hysterectomy. I remember waking from the anaesthetic and asking the nurse twice, “Are you tricking me, or is it really done?”
But the hardest part wasn’t over. Complications caused acute kidney failure, emergency surgery and five days in intensive care. I was connected to drips and tubes, unable to eat, weak, and struggling emotionally as much as physically. On my 50th birthday, I was still in hospital, frightened, exhausted and wondering if life would ever feel normal again.
The surgery removed the cancers, but recovery brought more infections, more hospital admissions, more scans, more waiting, more fear. Even now, investigations continue. And through all of it, the hardest part has so often been the emotional side of survival.
Friends and family care deeply. But unless someone has lived through the fear of repeated tests, the ongoing uncertainty, and the weight of hearing the word “cancer” more than once, it can feel incredibly isolating. I realised there was so little support for people trying to rebuild emotionally after treatment, people who survive, but are left frightened, disconnected and unsure how to move forward.
That is why Beyond The Storm was founded. Because no one should have to find their way through what comes next alone.
